What is a compounded product?

Compounded products are not manufactured, but specially prepared medicine that is combined, mixed, or altered to meet the specific need of an individual patient.

Why do some patients need compounded medications?

A drug may be compounded for a patient who cannot be treated with an already available retail medication, such as a patient who has an allergy to a certain dye and needs a medication to be made without it, or someone who cannot swallow a tablet or capsule and needs a medicine in a liquid or dissolvable dosage form.

Are compounded medications covered by insurance?

The coverage of compounded medications depends in the insurance company and are reviewed on a case-to-case basis. Most insurance companies will require you to jump through many hoops for coverage or likely wont cover the product at all. The reality is, you should expect to pay out-of-pocket for compounded products. Fortunately, most compounded products are inexpensive to make; you may see the average prices for each formulation by clicking on the categories above.

Can my current medication be in a different formulation?
